What’s changing; and five things every Trust must get a grip on now

The Department of Health and Social Care and NHS England are coming together as a single organisation. It means fewer buffers, faster asks, and closer ministerial oversight.

For Trusts, the impact will be real: new reporting lines, leaner system partners, and sharper focus on money, performance, and delivery.

At Way Collective, we’ve been listening, watching and anticipating the changes across the NHS. Thinking about how Trusts can manage these changes and come out on top.

We’ve created a short two-page briefing to help Boards do just that.

It sets out what’s changing and the five capabilities every Trust needs a grip on now:

  1. Population and health intelligence – seeing what your local system really needs.

  2. Contracts and flexibility – adapting quickly as accountability moves.

  3. Operational and business intelligence – tracking efficiency and impact in real time.

  4. Strategy, communications and relationships – giving staff and partners a clear story.

  5. Governance and risk – steering change safely, especially around tech and data.

It also includes key questions for Board discussion, quick actions to take this month, and a timeline of how the next two years are likely to unfold.

If you’re a Trust leader navigating the DHSC/NHSE changes, this is a practical starting point to focus your next conversation. If you need some help navigating these changes, then get in touch and we can talk about how we can help.
